Indian Philosophy
The classical schools - Vedanta, Nyaya, Samkhya, Yoga and Mimamsa - with Buddhist, Jain, Charvaka and Sikh thought, and introductions to the philosophies of India, China, the West and the East.
Indian philosophy counts six orthodox (āstika) schools, which accept the authority of the Vedas: Nyaya (logic and knowledge), Vaisheshika (atoms and categories), Samkhya (spirit and matter), Yoga (the discipline of the mind), Mimamsa (the interpretation of the Vedas) and Vedanta (the Upanishads’ teaching on Brahman and the self). The heterodox (nāstika) schools do not accept the Vedas: Buddhism, Jainism and the materialist Charvaka. Sikh philosophy, from the teaching of Guru Nanak and the Guru Granth Sahib, stands on its own.
